Hair Cutting Tools A Brief History
Hair cutting tools have existed for centuries. As early as 6,0000 years ago, Egyptian barbers used crude instruments such as sharpened flint or oyster shells to shave their faces and heads. Ancient Romans utilized updated metalworking technology to create new tools such as scissors made from bronze or iron. Instead of the common pivot and finger openings modern scissors use, they had two blades on a common metal loop. In the mid-1700s, harder steel made better quality scissors which were able to be mass produced. The first manual clipper was made in the 19th century which worked by squeezing and releasing a pair of handles. Electric clippers work the same way by utilizing an electric motor to oscillate the blades side to side. Today, barbers and hairdressers use a wide variety of tools such as scissors, razors, clippers, trimmers and sometimes even swords or fire depending on how edgy the salon is.
